New Orleans Cemetery Tours: Those who tour New Orleans’ cemeteries will find that our history is often buried six feet ABOVE ground. Why do we bury above ground and how do we get so many bodies into one tomb? Your walking tour of Lafayette Cemetery will answer your questions and give you a new perspective on life and death in New Orleans’ past and present.
Lafayette Number 1 was the first cemetery in the Garden District. There is evidence that the cemetery was "laid out" before the idea for the Garden District was conceived.
1853 was the year of a terrible yellow fever epidemic. It is said that Lafayette Cemetery was the site of mass burials of yellow fever victims.
Lafayette Cemetary has been the location of movies such as Double Jeopardy and Interview with the Vampire. It’s the cemetery of Ann Rice’s Vampire books.
Your sight-seeing tour will not be complete without a visit to one of our historic New Orleans cemeteries. This New Orleans Cemetery Tour begins at the entrance to Lafayette Cemetery across from Commander's palace. Bring your camera and your imagination on this leisurely walking tour.
New Orleans cemetery tours are $10.00. Special rates for school groups.
Why a New Orleans walking tour? Small group New Orleans walking tours of our neighborhoods, the French Quarter, the Garden District, or our cemeteries, provide the best opportunity to see and learn about our unique places and customs.
New Orleans French Quarter Walking Tours
Your native New Orleanian guide can put you right there with the bold and courageous French Canadian, known as Bienville, as he explored the exotic Gulf Coast and established a city in a location his engineers thought to be "unfit for human habitation." The dynamic men and women who "grew" the old city and who at various times rescued it from ruin will be as real to you as your fellow tourists.
New Orleans Garden District Walking Tour
Discover the forgotten history of New Orleans' Garden District in the American Sector. These "Southern Yankees," were largely responsible for making New Orleans the most prosperous city in the South and the fourth largest city in the U.S. during the mid 1800s. Their stunning mansions remain as monuments to industry, business smarts, and American capitalism.
New Orleans Cemetery Walking Tours
Our cities of the dead will grab hold of your imagination and stay with you as long as your memory remains intact. Ninety percent of all burials in New Orleans are still above ground. Simple wall vaults, large tombs, and copings with often poignant and sometimes amusing inscriptions memorialize the spirit of New Orleans' early residents.
If your time in New Orleans is limited, take one of our New Orleans walking tours. You won't regret it, I guaronteee!
Reserve your tour by email at info@tour-new-orleans.com, or call 504-914-2039.
